M. Night Shyamalan became a household name after his breakout film “The Sixth Sense” was a smash hit and nominated for six Academy Awards.
His follow up “Unbreakable” wasn’t as well received, although as more time passed, that film was also hailed as real achievement.
For his next film, Shyamalan decided he wanted to make something a little more joyous and less burdened by an almost tragic ending.
He was inspired by two things — a family finds a crop circle in their field and making an end-of-the-world movie from a narrower point of view based in a farmhouse like his own “Night of the Living Dead.”
He wrote the script, which he still calls the easiest experience of his career, and he injected a lot of elements from his own family into the film.
The story centers around a pastor who lost his faith after his wife tragically died and he’s raising their two children with help from his younger brother while all living on a farm outside Philadelphia. When strange events start happening locally and then globally, the world is thrown into chaos when aliens arrive on Earth but are they here for exploration or are they here for world domination?
