The “Weapons” prequel is moving forward with veteran screenwriter Zach Shields joining Zach Cregger to pen the script for the new film that is expected to tell Aunt Gladys’ origin story.
Of course, “Weapons” was a commercial and critical success for Cregger as his second feature film after his debut “Barbarians” became an unexpected hit. “Weapons” received overwhelmingly positive reviews and earned over $270 million at the worldwide box office.
Amy Madigan played Aunt Gladys in “Weapons” and ultimately earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Even before Madigan started winning awards, Cregger had already teased his interest in a “Weapons” prequel that would focus on Aunt Gladys and now it’s moving forward.
Shields is best known for working on films such as “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” for Warner Bros. and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” as well as “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Krampus.”
Now he’ll work on the “Weapons” prequel alongside Cregger as they write the script together.
Before he gets back to Aunt Gladys and her origin story, Cregger is first planning the release of his next film — an adaptation of the classic video game “Resident Evil” that is slated to land in theaters on September 18.
There’s no word yet if Cregger plans to direct the “Weapons” prequel but first things first, he’ll work on the script with Shields and then take the next step to bring the film to production.
