“Weapons” director Zach Cregger confirms he’s in talks with Warner Bros. about a prequel to his hit horror movie focused on the nefarious Aunt Gladys…
It looks like Aunt Gladys is going to haunt movie theaters again.
Following the immense success of “Weapons” with over $263 million earned worldwide, director and writer Zach Cregger confirms that he’s currently working on a prequel that would focus on Aunt Gladys, one of the main characters and the primary antagonist in his latest film.
Rumors began to swirl after “Weapons” became a smash hit that a prequel was potentially being developed and now Cregger has revealed that he’s already worked on the story and it’s just a matter of getting a deal hashed out with Warner Bros. to produce the movie .
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it,” Cregger told Fangoria. “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.”
According to Cregger, he actually had an idea in his mind already about exploring the Aunt Gladys character beyond her appearance in “Weapons” but the success of the film actually made his dream a reality.
Now he’s fleshing out the story with hopes that he’ll bring Aunt Gladys — originally played by Amy Madigan — back to the big screen with a prequel focused entirely on her.
“I was ready,” Cregger said about the ‘Weapons’ prequel. “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
Before he can really get working on a possible “Weapons” prequel, Cregger is first turning his attention to his “Resident Evil” reboot as he looks to dive back into the popular horror video game and bring a new film to life.
He’s teaming up with “Weapons” star Austin Abrams to lead the film and Cregger has promised that his “Resident Evil” is going to look and feel nothing like his previous two movies, which included the critically acclaimed “Barbarians.”
But once he’s done with “Resident Evil,” it seems like Cregger is more than ready to jump back into the world of “Weapons” and take a deeper dive on Aunt Gladys’ origin story before she arrived to wreak havoc in his latest film.
