Nicolas Cage might be the latest Oscar winner to lead a season of “True Detective” on HBO.
The veteran actor, who captured an Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in “Leaving Las Vegas,” is nearing a deal to star in the fifth season of the anthology series on HBO. Variety first reported the news.
While details around “True Detective” season 5 remain mostly a mystery, the show is expected to take place in the Jamaica Bay area in New York City. “True Detective: Night Country” showrunner Issa Lopez is returning for the fifth season of the show after the fourth installment was well received and earned numerous award nominations.
If Cage closes his deal, he would join a long list of Oscar award winning actors to star in “True Detective including Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country), Mahershala Ali (season 3) and Matthew McConaughey (season 1). “True Detective” seasons have also featured names like Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Vince Vaughn and numerous others.
The fourth installment of the series was the first that didn’t involve original series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who split with HBO, but the network decided to revive “True Detective” with Lopez on board to serve as showrunner after she received critical acclaim for her film “Tigers Aren’t Afraid.”
“True Detective” would also serve as only the second television series for Cage during his illustrious career — the first also came recently when he signed onto star in “Spider-Man: Noir” for MGM and Amazon Prime Video.
In addition to his Oscar winning role in “Leaving Las Vegas,” Cage has starred in dozens of notable roles over the years including appearances in films such as “Raising Arizona,” “The Rock,” “Con Air,” “National Treasure,” and more eclectic movies in recent years like “Mandy” and “Prisoners of Ghostland.”
