In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to watch our clocks for 2:17 a.m. and tell Ms. Gandy we won’t be in class today as we review the 2025 horror film “Weapons”…

Writer and director Zach Cregger was anything but a household name when his film “Barbarian” was released into theaters in 2022 but the immense success and critical acclaim that movie received suddenly made him one of the hottest properties in Hollywood.

So when Cregger penned his next script, which was described as a more personal story and a movie that somehow shared DNA with Paul Thomas Anderson’s wonderfully weird film “Magnolia,” a bidding war ensued to snag the rights. New Line Cinema ultimately won out with a whopping $38 million bid to cover production costs and salaries.

The disappointment about losing out on the film even hit Oscar winner Jordan Peele’s company after he parted ways with a couple of executives after failing to win Cregger’s next movie.

But production on the film ran into issues after Pedro Pascal was initially cast in the lead role but production delays largely due to the writers and actors strikes forced “The Last of Us” actor to drop out.

Cregger eventually secured stars such as Josh Brolin and Julia Garner instead and the film was off and running.

The story involves a small town where 17 children — all members of one local teacher’s classroom — mysteriously go missing and the entire community wants answers…
