In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to strike up the band and pray we make it until daybreak comes as we review the 2025 film “Sinners”….

Ryan Coogler has proven himself time and time again from his powerful first film “Fruitvale Station” to getting Marvel its first ever Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards with “Black Panther” and even reinventing the “Rocky” franchise with “Creed.”

But through four feature films, Coogler had never actually told his own original story.

While he certainly injected plenty of personal elements into his past movies, Coogler decided to hit the pause button on “Black Panther 3” and instead turn his attention to a story set in the deep south that was partially inspired by his uncle James and his passion for blues music and his own love for horror films after growing up being tormented by “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and then falling for movies like “Tales from the Hood” and “Candyman.”

Coogler penned a script that became one of the hottest properties in Hollywood but his pitch also involved seeking a deal that would allow him to maintain control over the project similar to the power directors like Quentin Tarantino are able to wield.

He eventually teamed up with Warner Bros., who allowed Coogler to craft the film on his own terms.

The movie takes place in the 1930s after twin brothers Smoke and Stack return to their home in Mississippi with plans to open a juke joint on the edge of town but opening night doesn’t go as planned when some unexpected visitors show up seeking an invitation inside…
