Long before he was a household name in horror, Robert Eggers was a theater director and designer who had made two short films before a script he wrote about a Puritan family banished from their home in the 1630s started getting some attention.
Before long, Eggers got the funding and he was off and running to make his directorial debut.
Growing up in New England, Eggers was fascinated with the concept of witches and he knew that was a subject he could transform into a horror story that felt personal to him while still being based in the past, which is always the time period where he prefers to work.
Armed with just a $4 million budget, Eggers crafted a dread soaked, self-contained horror film about a family haunted by a missing child and terrifying events that spiral out of control that make everybody involved question their own sanity about what’s real and what’s not.
