In 2011, Stuart Ortiz and longtime writing and directing partner Colin Minihan — operating under the name the Vicious brothers — released a found-footage film titled “Grave Encounters” about a group of ghost hunters that get trapped inside a haunted psychiatric hospital.
Despite a tiny budget, the film ended up making more than $5 million at the box office. Over the years, the duo continued to partner together on various horror films but for the latest movie, Ortiz decided to break out on his own.
Inspired by the incredibly popular Netflix documentary series “Tiger King,” Ortiz not only realized that people were into true crime stories but this kind of format could work well if transformed into a movie.
So Ortiz set out to create his own fictional universe with the entire film playing out as a “mockumentary” about a famed serial killer operating in California’s Inland Empire.
A series of brutal murders spanning decades leads to a pair of detectives leading an investigation into a methodical killer calling himself Mr. Shiny, who is exacting, precise and nearly impossible to track down as the body count continues to rise …
