Robert Eggers is well known for making gothic films and now it looks like he’ll get to make a gothic Christmas movie while adapting the classic Charles Dickens’ store “A Christmas Carol”…
Robert Eggers loves to make gothic movies and now he’s turning his attention to a classic Charles Dickens’ tale that seemingly fits right into his filmography.
Eggers is set to write and direct an adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” — the classic story where professional curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts that offer him a haunting vision of his past, present and future after he bah-humbugs his way through the holidays including his poor treatment of employee Bob Cratchit.
Warner Bros. is developing the film with Eggers and his longtime collaborator Willem Dafoe is being eyed for the lead role to play Ebenezer Scrooge. An official offer hasn’t been made to Dafoe yet but Eggers is reportedly writing the character of Scrooge specifically for him to play.
Eggers and Dafoe have worked together on numerous films in the past and it seems all but certain that they will team up again for this movie.
Of course there have been numerous adaptations of “A Christmas Carol” in the past including an animated Disney version starring Mickey Mouse.
While Eggers is best known for his gothic horror stories such as “The Witch” and the recently released “Nosferatu,” the story of “A Christmas Carol” strangely fits right into his style of filmmaking, especially with the time period where the story takes place.
“Nosferatu” ended up being Eggers’ biggest film to date with the movie earning over $181 million at the worldwide box office while getting overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Next up for Eggers is his original script for a film titled “Werwulf,” which is expected to begin shooting sometime in 2025.
