A former teacher turned author, Adam Cesare grew up learning to love horror first through Stephen King books his father used to read and then getting drawn into dark and sometimes horrifying comics like “Spawn” in the 1990s.
Cesare eventually started writing books of his own and as a devout fan of slashers, he realized that for all the horror stories out there about clowns, he had never heard of a clown at the center of a classic slasher. So he set out to create one himself.
Released in 2020, Cesare’s book told the story about a young woman and her father who relocate from the big city in Philadelphia to a small, one-horse town in nowhere Missouri to start fresh after a family tragedy. After arriving in town, they discover that there’s a real simmering tension between the adults and a growing population of discontent teens, who are far more focused on going viral on the internet than helping to preserve the town’s heritage.
But when a killer shows up wearing a Frendo the Clown mask — the symbol of the town’s most iconic factory — all hell breaks loose.
The book ended up winning the Bram Stoker Award for Best Young Adult Novel and the attention resulted in a deal to adapt the story into a feature film where Frendo the Clown would come to life on the big screen ….
