A trio of Oscar winners are teaming up for a ghost story with Martin Scorsese set to direct Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in his next film…
Martin Scorsese has picked the next film he’s set to direct and this time it’s a ghost story.
The Oscar winner is expected to begin production on “What Happens at Night” in January and he’s teaming up with his old friend Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence set for the lead roles. Of course, DiCaprio and Lawrence both have Academy Award wins of their owns so this is quite the trio kicking off this new film that is being produced by Apple.
“What Happens at Night” is based on a book of the same name from author Peter Cameron with screenwriter Patrick Marber penning the script. Originally, Scorsese was only expected to produce the film but he ultimately decided to serve as the director, which is now his follow up to “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also starred DiCaprio in the lead role.
The story follows a married American couple who travel to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child. After arriving, the couple checks into the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.
Of course, DiCaprio has become one of Scorsese’s favorite actors in recent years after previously teaming together on “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed,” “Shutter Island,” “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Right now, DiCaprio is receiving rave reviews and early award consideration for his latest role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film “One Battle After Another.” Once he wraps up promotion on that film, DiCaprio shifts gears to begin working with Scorsese again on this latest project.
As for Lawrence, she hasn’t been as busy in recent years but starred in the comedy “No Hard Feelings” and then the movie “Die, My Love” alongside Robert Pattinson. This is her first time working with Scorsese but it’s safe to assume she’ll get a lot of buzz for this role.
