Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is continuing to add to his IMDB page with a variety of different roles and this time he’s taking on a supporting part in a new psychological thriller from A24…
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is trying to break out of his mold as a pure action star with more serious roles and he’s already receiving acclaim for playing ex-UFC fighter Mark Kerr in the upcoming biopic “The Smashing Machine.”
That film is being produced by A24 and now Johnson is reteaming with the studio on a new project where he’s expected to play a motivational guru in a psychological thriller tilted “Breakthrough.”
The film is set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California and the story follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness.
Johnson would play a supporting part as the guru with no word yet on who could potentially play the lead role in the film. “Breakthrough” was written by Zeke Goodman, who has also dabbled in acting with roles in TV series such as “The Hunting Party” and the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” adaptation.
While he’s best known for his WWE personality “The Rock,” Johnson has crossed over into films and become one of the most successful actors over the past 20 years. Primarily starring in action or comedy vehicles, Johnson has served as the lead or supporting actor in numerous blockbusters but he’s been taking a different approach to his career lately.
After championing “The Smashing Machine” where he plays a legendary MMA fighter, Johnson has already signed onto star in Oscar winner Martin Scorsese’s next major film — a crime thriller set in Hawaii where the part-time professional wrestler will star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.
Now Johnson is adding a psychological thriller to his resume with the role in “Breakthrough.”\
