Doug Liman, who most recently directed the “Road House” remake, is taking a stab at adapting the Stephen King epic novel “The Stand” into a new film…
Doug Liman — who is best known for his work on films such as the “Road House” remake, “Edge of Tomorrow” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” — is set to direct a new adaptation of the epic Stephen King novel “The Stand.”
Paramount is producing and now the project is set to search for a writer to adapt King’s biggest book at a whopping 1,153 pages, which was first released in 1978 with a new revised edition released in 1990.
Of course, “The Stand” has been adapted into a pair of miniseries in the past with the first in 1994 and then a new version released in 2020. It appears Liman is adapting “The Stand” into a one-off movie and there are no plans for a multi-film adaptation.
“The Stand” takes place in an apocalyptic future where a disease has wiped out most of the population and the remaining survivors are locked in a true battle between good and evil while each searching for a leader. Two emerge—Mother Abagail, the benevolent 108-year-old woman who urges them to build a peaceful community in Boulder, Colorado; and Randall Flagg, the nefarious “Dark Man,” who delights in chaos and violence. As the dark man and the peaceful woman gather power, the survivors will have to choose between them—and ultimately decide the fate of all humanity.
There’s no word yet on whether or not King has any involvement in the plans to adapt his book.
The horror author is in hot demand these days — pretty much like always — with numerous projects in the works from his many books. Mike Flanagan just recently adapted a short novella from King into his film “The Life of Chuck” and he’s currently in production on a new TV series adaptation of King’s classic “Carrie” for Amazon Prime. “The Long Walk” — from another King book — is being released as a horror movie in 2025 with Mark Hamill starring in one of the lead roles.
While waiting for a script to get completed, Liman is next attached to a film called “Deeper” — an underwater supernatural thriller — that’s being made for Tom Cruise and Ana De Armas to star.
