In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to deck the halls, jingle some bells and protect the herd as we review the 2015 holiday horror film “Krampus”…

Writer and director Michael Dougherty, who is perhaps best known for his Halloween anthology ‘Trick ‘r Treat,’ always wanted to make a creepy Christmas movie.

Fascinated by a darker side of the holiday as a Pagan celebration that often times included winter spirits, ghosts and Christmas witches, Dougherty eventually discovered the story of the Krampus, a horned creature of Central and Eastern Alpine folklore that traveled alongside St. Nicholas and punished badly behaved children.

That initial idea gave Dougherty a way into his holiday themed horror film but it took him several years to finally come up with a proper story that he could transform into a movie. After teaming up with fellow writers Todd Casey and Zach Shields, Dougherty decided that the best way to inject Krampus into a film was to make a traditional holiday movie.

His idea centered around a dysfunctional family who’s anger, rage and disdain during the holidays invites that malevolent spirit into their home to remind them what Christmas is all about…
