“The Substance” was one of the biggest surprises at the Golden Globes with five nominations including Best Picture…

“The Substance” continues to reign supreme in 2024 after Coralie Fargeat’s brutal body-horror took home the award for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and now the movie starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley is vying for five different awards at the Golden Globes.

The nominations for the coveted awards were handed down on Monday with “The Substance” receiving numerous nominations for the stars, the writer and director as well as the film earning a Best Picture nod in the comedy or musical category.

In addition to the Best Picture nomination, Moore was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy with Qualley getting a nod for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture.

Meanwhile, Fargeat got nominated in two different categories including Best Director – Motion Picture where she was nominated as one of two women alongside Payal Kapadia for her film “All We Imagine as Light.” Fargeat also got nominated for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture where she’ll contend with veterans like Jesse Eisenberg for his film “A Real Pain” as well as Sean Baker for “Anora.”

“My first reaction was a big scream of joy,” Fargeat told Deadline about the Golden Globe nominations. “For real! I was in my apartment, and I literally shouted a very big scream of joy that probably all my neighbors heard.

“I was very, very happy and really honored. That was a huge accomplishment for me, and I’m so proud to be there alongside so many other filmmakers that I deeply admire. It was huge news for me, obviously.”

Horror films have rarely broken through any major awards with only a handful actually receiving nominations at shows like the Golden Globes or the Oscars.

That definitely wasn’t the case with “The Substance” earning five nominations in almost every major category including Best Picture.

The Golden Globe awards go down on January 5 from Los Angeles with the show broadcast on CBS and Paramount+
