Back in 2007, screenwriter Scott Lobdell got the greenlight on his film “Half to Death” getting picked up and put into production.
Lobdell’s vision about centering a slasher story on one main character who is both victim and heroine was a really intriguing concept.
Writer and director Christopher Landon was eventually brought in for rewrites but unfortunately, the project never actually got off the ground.
The script was revived by Landon a few years later because he loved the idea of a girl trapped in a time loop who has to solve her own murder.
He later presented the reworked script to his colleague Jason Blum from Blumhouse Productions after working together on the “Paranormal Activity” series.
Blumhouse loved it and the film got the go ahead from Universal Pictures. Jessica Rothe landed the lead role playing Tree — a young college student who wakes up on her birthday in a stranger’s dorm room after a night out drinking but there isn’t much of a celebration after she is murdered later that night and then wakes up to do it all over again …
