A sequel to “Heart Eyes” is on the way with director Josh Ruben returning with a release date already set for 2028…

The Heart Eyes Killer is coming back for more.

“Heart Eyes 2” is officially happening with the slasher film getting a sequel with a release date already set for Feb. 11, 2028.

Josh Ruben is returning to direct the sequel after he also helmed the original, which earned $33 million at the box office on an $18 million budget. While the film didn’t exactly crush it at the box office, the new age slasher was well received by both critics and audiences so Paramount is backing the sequel due out in 2028.

In the original, Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding play a pair of co-workers who are mistaken as a couple that end up being targeted by the Heart Eyes Killer — a masked slasher who cuts down lovers on the most romantic holiday — Valentine’s Day. The film was equal parts horror and comedy with Gigi Zumbado, Michaela Watkins, Devon Sawa, and Jordana Brewster also starting in the movie.

It’s unclear if any of the original cast members are expected to return and plot details are being kept under wraps for now but Ruben is expected to also co-write the script with Darcy Fowler from a story by Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy.

After the first film was released, Ruben said that he felt “Heart Eyes” could potentially become a franchise in the future and it appears that he’s getting his wish.

“I’ll put it this way: You could replicate the structure of any great rom-com, from ‘His Girl Friday’ to ‘Defending Your Life,’ and you could drop Heart Eyes into the center of that story, and have him flash and slash about,” Ruben told Variety.

“That’s what’s exciting about this: There’s an opportunity that we could have whoever the filmmaker was — certainly, I’d be interested — genuinely trying to create or replicate that rom-com, or the feeling of a “Bridget Jones” or “Love Actually” or what have you, but actually have those people terrified by this psychopathic killer.”

Stay tuned for more information on “Heart Eyes 2” including casting information as it becomes available!
