Horror movie remakes almost feel inevitable for some films or franchises, especially those most popular with fans. In 2003, Platinum Dunes struck gold with the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remake, which earned over $107 million at the box office on a small $10 million budget.

That led to producers seeking out other franchises to reboot including when New Line Cinema’s Toby Emmerich approached Platinum Dunes about a new “Friday the 13th” installment.

After 10 films and one mashup for “Freddy vs. Jason,” the popular franchise had effectively stalled out but the hope was a new remake could reinvigorate interest in “Friday” films and Jason Voorhees.

The idea was a remake but the film would combine elements from the first four “Friday the 13th” films to create something totally new but with familiar mythology.

Mark Swift and Damian Shannon were hired to pen the script after working on “Freddy vs. Jason” and this time, they gave a little more insight into Jason’s origin before fast forwarding to modern day where a young man named Clay goes searching around Camp Crystal Like in hopes of finding his missing sister who may have encountered a giant, hulking hockey masked wearing killer ….
