The planned “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot is no longer happening.
On Saturday, Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed that Hulu decided not to move forward with the series, which was set to serve as a direct continuation of the original show that ran for seven seasons ending in 2003. Gellar broke the news on Instagram.
“So I am really sad to have to share this but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” Gellar said. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale.’
“I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots and thanks to Chloe, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you. This doesn’t change any of that. I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
Chloe Zhao — the Oscar winning director, who is up for the same award in 2026 — championed the project and planned to direct the pilot episode for the series. It was Zhao’s vision for the “Buffy” reboot that effectively got Gellar on board after she said for years that she had no plans to return to the role despite rabid fan interest.
The reboot tentatively titled “Buffy: New Sunnydale” was set to star Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the lead role as the new slayer with Nora and Lilla Zuckerman handling writing duties for the debut episode. Several more cast members were added after the show was given a pilot order and it appeared everything was moving forward.
Rumors had swirled that some of the original cast members from the legacy show were also expected to appear in the series but the show never got past the pilot stage for that to happen.
Sadly, Hulu decided otherwise and pulled the plug on the planned “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series.
As for Gellar, she’s got plenty else happening including her starring role in the new sequel “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” which opens in theaters next Friday March 20.
