“Evil Dead” actor and horror legend Bruce Campbell revealed that he’s taking a step back from work and making appearances at conventions to seek treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
He made the announcement on social media with hopes that he’ll be able to return to a more regular schedule later this year when his next major film is scheduled for release.
“Hi folks, these days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity’ so let’s go with that — I’m having one of those,” Campbell wrote. “It’s also called a type of cancer that’s ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’ I apologize if that’s a shock — it was to me, too. The good news is I’m not gonna go into any more detail. I’m posting this because professionally, a few things will have to change — appearances and cons and work in general need to take a back seat to treatment. My plan is to get as well as I possibly can over the summer so that I can tour with my new movie ‘Ernie & Emma’ this fall.
“There are several cons this year summer that I have to cancel. Big regrets on my part. Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand. That’s about it. I’m not trying to enlist sympathy — or advice — I just want to get ahead of this information in case fals information gets out (which it will). Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while. As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon.”
The 67-year-old actor and frequent collaborator with longtime friend and director Sam Raimi has been staple of Hollywood for over five decades appearing in dozens of films and television series during his career.
Of course, he’s probably best know for playing Ash Williams in the “Evil Dead” series after appearing in several films and a TV series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.”
More recently, Campbell had a starring role in the Peacock series “Hysteria” where he played Police Chief Ben Dandridge alongside Anna Camp and Julie Bowen.
Campbell is also a regular fixture on the convention circuit where he makes numerous appearances per year to meet fans and sign autographs. Obviously, he’s putting those appearances on hold as he undergoes treatment for his cancer.
For all of us at Rewind of the Living Dead, we are wishing Bruce Campbell a good recovery and we hope to see him back on the big screen sooner than later!
