“The Mummy” sequel starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz is now official with the stars signing deals and a release date set for 2028…

“The Mummy” is officially being resurrected.
Already in the works for some time, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially closed their deals to return for the latest sequel in the popular horror-adventure franchise after they originally starred together in “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns.” The third film in the series “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” saw Fraser return but Weisz did not and her role was recast with Maria Bello.
The new film is expected to ignore that third movie and serve as a direct sequel to the original two films in the series.
“The Mummy” sequel is being directed by the Radio Silence team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who are currently in the midst of promoting their next film “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.” Of course, Radio Silence is well known for films such as “Ready or Not,” “Abigail” and the two most recent “Scream” sequels prior to “Scream 7.”
Universal is distributing the film with a release date already set for May 19, 2028.
In “The Mummy,” Fraser played explorer and treasure hunter Rick O’Connell, who manages to find the legendary city of the dead in Egypt where there are supposedly great riches but also a hidden curse. He teams up with a librarian and Egyptologist named Evelyn (played by Weisz) and along with her brother they head back to the city to discover what actually hides inside but they also accidentally unleash a mummy doomed for eternity, who seeks to resurrect his long lost love while bringing plagues upon the world after his resurrection.
“The Mummy Returns” picks up several years later with Rick and Evelyn married and with a son and they are once again drawn back into battle after Evelyn is kidnapped and worshippers of the evil mummy Imhotep seek to resurrect him again but this time arm him with an unkillable army of undead soldiers to conquer the world.
“The Mummy” franchise earned more than $1.8 billion worldwide at the box office across three films.
