Carpenter was also inspired by his love for famed author H.P. Lovecraft, who often wrote books filled with cosmic horror with indescribable creatures decorating many of his most popular stories.

In Carpenter’s film, the story centers around an insurance investigator named John Trent who is hired to track down a missing horror author, whose books have been known to actually drive people mad.
