Danny Boyle and Alex Garland never really intended on returning to make a sequel to their critically acclaimed film “28 Days Later” but the pair finally reunited when an idea was sparked to see what happened to the world years after the “rage virus” took hold and transformed people into homicidal killing machines devoid of emotion or regret.
The end product was “28 Years Later” — a film that as you guessed it, picked up 28 years after the initial outbreak — but Boyle and Garland actually had an idea for a three-film series that would conclude their story. With filming costs skyrocketing, Boyle decided the best course of action was shooting the first two films in the series back-to-back but that meant there was no way he could direct both features.
So Garland wrote the script and Nia DaCosta — best known for her work on the “Candyman” reboot — was hired to direct.
DaCosta loved the idea but she told Boyle and Garland that she would only come on board if they would allow her the creative freedom to make the movie her way.
They agreed and DaCosta picked up filming on her sequel just after production on “28 Years Later” wrapped.
The new film follows Spike as he runs afoul of a notorious survivor named Jimmy and his band of acolytes while Dr. Kelson returns with hopes of proving that the rage zombies can eventually find some humanity again.
