Australian filmmaker Zak Hilditch already had several credits on his resume but his latest work spawned from a personal tragedy he suffered in his life. Hilditch’s mother passed away and while mired in his grief, he realized that there’s really no one there who can just tell you how to navigate such a devastating loss.
The story really came together after he traveled to his mother’s house — his childhood home — to pack up her belongings and as he went room-by-room, he made all sorts of discoveries that helped him to better know his mother but also begin to process her being gone.
That gave him the idea for a character who would endure a similar tragedy and the journey would take them room-by-room, place by place in a search for catharsis — and finally this story would take place in the zombie apocalypse.
