A killer ventriloquist’s dummy is coming back to life with a “Magic” remake in the works from Sam Raimi and the writers behind “Freddy vs. Jason”…
A remake of the 1978 horror film “Magic” is in the works with Sam Raimi producing the film alongside Roy Lee, who just produced the horror hit of the summer with “Weapons.”
Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who previously penned the scripts for “Freddy vs. Jason” as well as the 2009 “Friday the 13th” remake, are handling the script for the project.
The original film starred future Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins as Corky, a middling magician struggling with his act, when he’s introduced to the idea of using a ventriloquist’s dummy into his act. The dummy named “Fats” helps transform Corky into a hit sensation.
Just when it looks like Corky is really about to break into the mainstream with his own TV series, he bails and returns home to New York where he’s reunited with an old high school friend who he believes has become his soulmate. But “Fats” has different ideas, especially when it comes to sharing Corky’s attention, and the bodies start piling up.
The film became a cult classic with stars like Ann-Margret and Burgess Meredith also appearing in “Magic” alongside Hopkins.
While Raimi is producing the film, he’s not sitting in the director’s chair so that job search is still underway.
Producers Chris Hammond and Tim Sullivan have long championed the “Magic” remake and now they’ll get the chance to work on the project alongside Raimi and Lee.
There’s no word yet on how quickly the “Magic” remake might come to fruition but everybody is on board to get working on this horror film, especially given how long it took to secure the rights and get the project off the ground.
