Dakota Fanning’s upcoming horror film “Vicious,” from the director behind “The Strangers,” is no longer getting a theatrical release and instead heads to streaming in October…

A new horror film starring Dakota Fanning is no longer receiving a theatrical release and instead the movie is headed straight to streaming later this year.

“Vicious” — written and directed by Bryan Bertino, who also made “The Strangers” and the haunting film “The Dark and the Wicked” — was originally expected to land in theaters in 2025. The film was eventually pulled from Paramount’s release scheduled and now under new ownership following a buyout from Skydance, the movie is no longer expected to receive a wide release.

Now “Vicious” is scheduled to land on the Paramount+ streaming service with the film set for an October 10 release date.

The film will get an official debut at Fantastic Fest in Austin in September before then landing on Paramount+ a month later.

“Vicious” follows a woman named Polly (Fanning) who spends the night fighting for her existence as she slips down a rabbit hole contained inside a gift from a late-night visitor.

In addition to Fanning, the film also stars Kathryn Hunter, Mary McCormack, Rachel Blanchard, Devyn Nekoda, Klea Scott and Emily Mitchell.

The news that “Vicious” is heading straight to streaming is particularly rough after Cindy Holland, the new head of Paramount+ following the Paramount-Skydance merger, stated that films going straight to streaming “are not a priority” for the company with a planned focus on more theatrical releases.

Now just days later, a highly anticipated horror film from a well respected writer and director is no longer headed to movie theaters and instead receives a direct to streaming release on Paramount+.

“Vicious” debuts at Fantastic Fest before then landing on streaming as of Oct. 10.
