The upcoming “M3GAN” spinoff film “SOULM8TE” is going to be much more adult oriented than its predecessor with a sex robot gone wrong…
“M3GAN 2.0” was supposed to be one of the biggest films of the year coming from Blumhouse but the once AI powered robot gone wrong sputtered at the box office earning just $10 million during its opening weekend. Perhaps audiences just weren’t interested in the film after teasers and trailers seemed to lean really hard into the campy, goofier parts of the original “M3GAN” but didn’t feature any of the horror that made the original fun but also slightly terrifying.
A course correction could be coming soon from the upcoming “M3GAN” spinoff film titled “SOULM8TE” that’s due out on January 9, 2026.
Unlike the PG-13 “M3GAN” movies, “SOULM8TE” is going to be rated “R” with a much more adult oriented storyline teased as an “erotic thriller” where a man acquires an Artificially Intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife and in an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate.
Lily Sullivan — best known for her role in the recent film “Evil Dead Rise” — is playing the killer robot and James Wan, whose production company Atomic Monster produced “M3GAN” alongside Blumhouse, is excited to take a deeper dive into the seedier side of artificial intelligence with this film. Kate Dolan is directing the spinoff film.
“M3GAN, obviously, dabbles in the PG-13 world, the younger demographic,” Wan told EW. “We always felt like there might be a more adult story to tell, and that’s really what SOULM8TE is. SOULM8TE is basically set in the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the ’90s. It’s like Fatal Attraction but with robots.”
Allison Williams, who plays M3GAN’s original creator Gemma in the first and second films in the series, is serving as a producer on “SOULM8TE” and she recognized right away that life-size sex dolls are already a real thing in the world so the next step to a full blown AI powered robot probably isn’t far off.
“It’s already happening in parts of the world. These exist,” Williams said “So it felt irresistible to then say, if a M3GAN existed in our world, someone would take that tech and put it in the form of a female-bodied person whose sole purpose on the planet is to pleasure a person. We extrapolate from there.”
“SOULM8TE” was already shot in New Zealand and the film is currently in post-production.
It’s unclear if there are plans for any changes to the film in the wake of “M3GAN 2.0” struggling at the box office but the next film set in the same universe is a totally different genre.
