In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to load up on snacks and petrol and make sure no blood gets in our mouth or eyes as we review the 2002 film “28 Days Later”…

As a teenager growing up in England, Alex Garland loved zombie films but he effectively forgot all about the genre for the next decade until he discovered the video game Resident Evil.

He loved playing the game but realized that his biggest fear wasn’t the slow-moving zombies but rather running out of bullets to shoot them.

That’s what gave him the idea — what if zombies moved as quickly as dogs? Garland began developing a script based on that very premise with different approach to zombies that instead of having them rise from the dead, he infected them with a gruesome “rage” virus that made victims transform into ravenous and rabid beasts.

Director Danny Boyle, who adapted Garland’s book ‘The Beach’ into a feature film really liked the script and he decided he wanted to take a stab at this unique take for a horror movie.

With a small budget, hand-held cameras and a scrappy young cast filled with nobodies who would go onto become somebodies, Boyle and Garland ended up creating a haunting vision for the future where “rage” zombies are constantly looking for a new victim and a survivor waking up alone in a hospital bed with no idea what’s happened….
