PODCAST: ‘Final Destination 5’ Review

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to steal our co-worker’s gift certificates and take a life to save a life as we review the 2011 sequel “Final Destination 5”….

When “The Final Destination” was taking shape, the idea was that would be the last installment in the horror series but earning $187 million at the box office made everybody involved reconsider that plan.

So in 2010, development on a fifth “Final Destination” movie started with Eric Heisserer hired to pen the script after he previously wrote the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake with Steven Quale — a second unit director who cut his teeth under James Cameron — hired to direct the film.

There was also a decision to return to 3D once again with producer Craig Perry coming up with the idea to actually make the sequel into a prequel of sorts to toss in a new kind of twist to the franchise.

As he was writing the script, Heisserer admitted that coming up with the famed deaths in “Final Destination” was more difficult than he expected and called that challenge “ridiculously hard” but he eventually got the job done.

The story in the fifth film centered around a group of co-workers preparing for a weekend retreat but when a premonition saves many of them from being killed during a bridge collapse, they don’t have to wait long to figure out that death isn’t so easily averted….
