“The Last of Us’ is officially returning for season 3 on HBO.

Ahead of the season 2 debut on Sunday night, April 13, the popular, Emmy nominated series has been renewed for a third installment. The show based on the massive video game of the same name became a smash hit for HBO after being developed by “Chernobyl” creator and showrunner Craig Mazin and original game creator Neil Druckmann.

“We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of,” Mazin said in a statement. “The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of ‘The Last of Us’ with season three!”

While the creators behind the show haven’t revealed how many seasons it might take to adapt “The Last of Us” video game into a complete series, the expectation has always been that it would likely take at least three seasons. The first season told the complete story of the first video game for “The Last of Us” but Mazin and Druckmann both agreed that it would take longer to adapt the second installment.

“To see ‘The Last of Us’ brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” Druckmann said about the renewal. “Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions.

“On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of ‘The Last of Us’!”

The second season of “The Last of Us” debuts on Sunday night — we’ll have full recaps for every episode — with the show picking up five years after the events of season one as Joel and Ellie (Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey) are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.

The cast for “The Last of Us” season 2 also includes Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria with Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Catherine O’Hara also guest stars.
