“The Last of Us” season 2 is set to debut on HBO on Sunday April 13 but how many more seasons should we expect of the video game adaptation?

The anticipated building for “The Last of Us” season 2 is reaching a fever pitch with the show set to return on Sunday night, April 13 on HBO but perhaps the biggest question fans have is how many more seasons are remaining to tell this story?

Well that’s not a finite answer just yet but there is definitely going to be a third season and potentially a fourth, depending on how long it takes showrunner Craig Mazin and original “Last of Us” video game creator Neil Druckmann to finish telling the story. As the debut for season 2 draws near, Mazin revealed recently that while “The Last of Us” season 1 captured the entire story from the first video game, he always knew it would take more to tell the next chapter with “The Last of Us Part II.”

That’s where the balancing act begins because Mazin doesn’t want to stretch this show out so far that fans are potentially waiting years to get new episodes so they’re trying to nail down exactly how much time it’s going to take to finish the series.

“It feels like we’ve got one or two more seasons,” Mazin told Variety. “It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets big. You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.”

In recent years, fans have grown accustomed to waiting years between seasons and while interest varies from show to show, it’s tough to imagine “The Last of Us” faithful would suddenly jump ship because it took longer to finish production on a season.

That said, Mazin and Druckmann have been clear from the start that they always intended on telling the complete story from “The Last of Us” and “The Last of Us Part II” for the HBO series and while certain elements, characters and storylines have changed, the biggest part of the plot stays the same.

While “The Last of Us Part II” is serving as the road map for how “The Last of Us” TV series is going to eventually end, there are millions of video game enthusiasts curious if Druckmann might ever return for “The Last of Us Part III.”

“I was waiting for this question,” Druckmann said about a third game. “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

For now, get ready for “The Last of Us” season 2 to debut on HBO on Sunday night, April 13 at 9 p.m. ET with the show also airing on the Max streaming service.
