Robert Eggers is wasting no time setting up another film for his future with plans to write and direct a sequel to the cult classic fantasy film “Labyrinth”…
Robert Eggers is ready to revive the Goblin King
The writer and director, who just revealed plans for his next film called “Werwulf” — a 13th century set werewolf movie — has also signed onto create a sequel to the 1986 cult classic film “Labyrinth.”
Eggers is tackling the project after rumors first stared swirling about his interest in potentially remaking “Labyrinth” during the promotion for his most recent film “Nosferatu.” Rather than remake the movie that originally starred Jennifer Connelly and the late David Bowie, Eggers is instead expected to make a direct sequel to the original film that was considered a bust at the box office when it was first released but eventually became a fan favorite in the following years.
“Labyrinth” tells the story of Sarah — a 16-year-old girl who wishes her brother away after she’s forced to babysit him and he won’t stop crying — but to her horror, the wish is granted and her baby brother is whisked away by the Goblin King Jareth and taken back to his kingdom. Sarah is then forced to travel to this mystical labyrinth to rescue her brother while encountering all sorts of creatures along the way in an effort to save him from the Goblin King.
There’s no word on Eggers’ plans for the sequel but numerous reports have stated that he doesn’t plan to remake the original film but instead carry on the story started from the first film released in 1986. Eggers is expected to pen the script alongside frequent collaborator Sjón, who also co-wrote his feature film “The Northman” and they’re also working together on “Werwulf.”
It’s unknown if Connelly could potentially return for a “Labyrinth” sequel, although she’s often spoke about her fondness for the original film after working alongside Jim Henson and his wonderfully creative puppets and practical effects that made the original movie so beloved.
“Jim was a genius,” Connelly said about working on ‘Labyrinth’ back in 2024. “And we don’t really make movies like that anymore. All those practical, wonderful puppets working together on those beautifully crafted sets. It feels different than the way we make a lot of films now; it feels kind of special.”
It’s expected that Eggers will tackle his “Labyrinth” sequel after he finishes work on “Werwulf,” which is already dated for a Christmas Day release in 2026.
